Nea Peramos is one of the most popular seaside resorts in the Kavala region. It is located about 18 km west of the city and just a few kilometers from Nea Iraklitsa. Thanks to its proximity to Bulgaria, long sandy beaches, and the famous Ammolofi Beach, the resort has been a favored destination for many Bulgarian tourists for years.
It is important to note that there is another town in Greece with the same name – Nea Peramos near Athens. Here, we are referring to the resort in the Kavala region, part of the Paggaio municipality.
The town has a refugee history typical of many settlements in Northern Greece established during the early decades of the 20th century. Today, Nea Peramos is a vibrant resort with a seaside promenade, tavernas, cafes, shops, and a variety of accommodation options.

The Beach in Nea Peramos
The town beach extends along a large portion of the resort. The strip is sandy, and the water is usually calm and suitable for families with children.
There are both free public areas and organized sections with beach bars. The beach offers amenities such as showers and changing rooms, and Nea Peramos is among the locations in the area awarded the Blue Flag.
Along the sea stretches a long promenade, especially pleasant for evening strolls. Most of the restaurants, cafes, and shops are concentrated in the central part, and during the summer months, the resort becomes quite lively.
Ammolofi – The Most Popular Beach in the Area
To the west of Nea Peramos lies Ammolofi – one of the most recognizable beaches in the Kavala region. Its name means “sand dunes,” and the landscape fully justifies it: fine light sand, clear water, and a long shoreline.
The beach combines organized beach bars with quieter free sections. On weekends and at the peak of the season, some areas can get quite busy, while in other parts you can still find more peaceful spots.
Ammolofi offers parking, showers, changing rooms, beach establishments, and water sports activities. The beach is also awarded the Blue Flag and remains one of the strongest reasons people choose Nea Peramos for their vacation.
In older travel descriptions, you will often find the beach divided into “first,” “second,” and “third” dunes. These names are still used colloquially today, but in practice, Ammolofi is one long beach area with different characteristics in each section.
Vrasidas Peninsula and Small Coves
Between Nea Peramos and Ammolofi lies the Vrasidas Peninsula. This is a great choice for people who prefer smaller coves and a more natural coastal environment.
The area offers several small beaches and rocky coves surrounded by greenery. The peninsula is accessed via a dirt road, so it is best to drive carefully.

Anaktoropolis Fortress
At the edge of Nea Peramos, on the hill above the sea, lie the remains of the medieval fortress of Anaktoropolis.
It is one of the most interesting historical sites in the area and gives the resort a distinct character. From the fortress grounds, you get beautiful views of Nea Peramos, the bay, and the coastline toward Ammolofi.
Vineyards and Grape Region
The lands around Nea Peramos are famous for viticulture. On the way to Ammolofi and neighboring villages, you will see numerous vineyard fields.
During the season, you can often find local grapes and other produce directly from local growers. One of the widespread varieties is Sultana – a seedless light grape, ideal for fresh consumption as well as raisins.
This is one of the pleasant contrasts of the area – just a few minutes from the lively beaches begin the vineyards and the peaceful countryside landscape.
Shops, Restaurants, and Amenities
Nea Peramos is a large enough resort to offer almost everything needed for a longer vacation.
In the central zone, there are supermarkets, smaller grocery stores, bakeries, pharmacies, butcher shops, fish markets, gas stations, and various services. The seaside promenade is lined with tavernas, cafes, and pastry shops.
Accommodation is mostly in apartments, guest houses, and small family hotels.
What to Try
Tavernas offer typical Greek cuisine: fresh fish, squid, octopus, mussels, salads, and various mezedes.
Among the traditional drinks are ouzo, tsipouro, and retsina – a characteristic Greek wine with a pine resin aroma. Its taste is distinctive and differs significantly from standard dry white wine.
Markets and Local Produce
During the season, there is traditional street and mobile trade in the area. You can still see vans with fruit, vegetables, or fish driving around neighborhoods announcing their goods over loudspeakers – a typical sight in many Greek towns.
For fruits, vegetables, olives, olive oil, and other products, local markets are often a great opportunity to buy directly from producers.
When is the Best Time to Visit Nea Peramos?
July and August are the busiest months, and on weekends, Ammolofi can be especially crowded.
For people who prefer a quieter vacation, early June and September are often a more pleasant choice. The weather usually remains great for the beach, and the resort is much quieter compared to the peak season.
Who is Nea Peramos Suitable For?
Nea Peramos is a great choice for people who want to combine the conveniences of a larger resort with access to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Kavala region.
There is more life and dining options here compared to some smaller neighboring villages, yet just a few minutes away are Ammolofi, the Vrasidas Peninsula, and quieter coves.
Kavala is also close enough for an evening stroll, shopping, or a day trip.
